Welcome

Hello and welcome to our May e-bulletin.

Our main story this month is the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy announced by Government, involving a £1.2 billion long-term plan to make cycling and walking the natural choice for shorter journeys. See the article below for news, links to related documents and funding opportunities.

As mentioned last month, we're very pleased to announce the re-launch of TravelWise Week. The week-long campaign will be held at the same time as, and in co-operation with, European Mobility Week - 16-22 September 2017. The theme is "Sharing gets you further".

Our 2017 training and event programme is now well underway with three events open for registration and featured in this e-bulletin:

  • 'EV Fest at Thames Valley Park' (17-18 May)
  • 'The Role of Technology in Sustainable Transport' - with Midlands Regional Meeting (23 May)
  • 'Developing Cycling and Walking Networks - with Yorkshire Regional Meeting (26 June)

The above events are all free for members sending one delegate.

We also have 15-20% member discounts on our partners' events - e.g. next week's Cycle City Active City Bradford, Consultation and Participation in Transport Planning (24-25 May), and Transport Practitioners' Meeting (TPM, 28-29 June).

Regional meetings (see sidebar) are also a great place for sharing good practice in the region and making local contacts. If you're a member and not receiving regional invitations directly, do get in touch.

Our Member Login Area on Acttravelwise.org is now populated with scores of guidance documents, conference presentations and other resources made available exclusively to members. If you're not already an Act TravelWise member, it's easy to join and you can do this by completing our Membership Form found on the website. Among other benefits, membership gives you a free place at all of our events throughout the year. You also get discounts on registration at our partners' events.

We encourage you to send in your news, job postings and event listings for future issues of the monthly e-bulletin. Just email them by the end of the month. This is a free service for members (£100 per item for non-members), reaching over 4,500 people. Also anyone may submit email addresses that you'd like added to our e-bulletin distribution list here.

Cycling and Walking Investment Policy Published

DfT Press Release

The Government has published its £1.2 billion long-term plan to make cycling and walking the natural choice for shorter journeys. [This will benefit England excluding London.]

The Government wants cycling and walking to become the norm by 2040 and will target funding at innovative ways to encourage people onto a bike or to use their own two feet for shorter journeys.

Plans include specific objectives to double cycling, reduce cycling accidents and increase the proportion of 5 to 10 year-olds walking to school to 55% by 2025.

The £1.2 billion is allocated as follows:

  • £50 million to provide cycling proficiency training for further 1.3 million children
  • £101 million to improve cycling infrastructure and expand cycle routes between the city centres, local communities, and key employment and retail sites
  • £85 million to make improvements to 200 sections of roads for cyclists
  • £80 million for safety and awareness training for cyclists, extra secure cycle storage, bike repair, maintenance courses and road safety measures
  • £389.5 million for councils to invest in walking and cycling schemes
  • £476.4 million from local growth funding to support walking and cycling

Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) Competition

A separate DfT press release on 19 April 2017 announced that organisations can apply for a share of up to £470,000 for innovative proposals to encourage people to make more journeys by bike or on foot. This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition with a deadline of 7 June 2017. It has two phases. Up to £170,000 is available for phase 1, and up to £300,000 for phase 2. The competition is open to individuals, groups and organisations, but is particularly suitable for early-stage, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Industry partners such as local government, independent and third sectors can carry out the project on their own or with others. Total project costs can vary between £25,000 and £100,000 and up to 15 weeks to up to 9 months, depending on the phase.
