Summary: As an example of Act TravelWise members successfully working together, Pindar Creative has created a 'make your own map' portal for Leicestershire County Council. The portal enables schools and workplaces to produce their own leaflets featuring a site-specific map.
In 2017 Leicester and Leicestershire were successful in securing a £3.2m Sustainable Travel Access Fund joint award to support a three-year programme of sustainable transport schemes. The funding enables the City and County to extend and deliver more sustainable transport projects under the 'Choose How You Move' branding and focusses on the west of the city and neighbouring areas of the county.
'Choose How You Move' aims to improve access to jobs, training and education, and as part of the on-going project, Leicestershire County Council asked Pindar Creative to create a portal that would enable schools and workplaces to produce their own leaflets featuring a site-specific map.
The intuitive mapping portal, SALI (Semi-Automated Leaflet Interface), allows the team at Leicestershire County Council to choose one of three templates (primary school, workplace or general) which complement the 'Choose How You Move' branding and provide useful information on active and sustainable travel.
Users can add up to two isochrones to indicate walking times from the site and icons can be dragged and dropped onto the map to show the position of cycle parking, park and stride locations, and crossings. The team can add a series of lines to the map to indicate walk routes, restricted parking and suggested cycle routes.
The portal was successfully used to consult with parents and residents prior to the launch of a 'clear zone' trial at Millfield L.E.A.D Academy in Braunstone and allowed the team to create a map showing two proposed park and stride sites and suggested walk routes.
Tony Lenihan, Safe and Sustainable Travel Coordinator, Leicestershire County Council, said:
"We have been really pleased with our mapping project. For us,the ability to quickly and easily produce personalised maps has been a real bonus when dealing with schools and businesses, allowing us to demonstrate viable routes in a variety of formats.
"From the initial contact through to the final result, the team at Pindar have been an absolute pleasure to deal with. We really appreciated the personal support from all of the team, including business support, design and IT with the ability to pick up a phone and talk to the right people at any time."
