Press Watch: City to get £270,000 bike lock-up
Date submitted: 8 March 2010
The city council has approved plans to convert a former electricity sub-station beside Lendal Bridge into a "cycle hub".
The facility will have parking, washing and changing facilities, repair services, a shop and cafe.
The council said the hub could "create a city centre focal point for cycling and help promote York as a progressive centre for sustainable transport".
The facility will be run by the Bike Rescue Project, a not-for-profit organisation which restores and then sells unwanted bikes.
Work on the conversion of the building will begin later this month. It is expected to be open by early autumn.
