Act Travelwise Training Event

DfT Economic Appraisal Workshop - 23 March 2016

Economic Appraisal of Active and Sustainable Travel: An Insight from the Department for Transport’s Economists

This workshop in Bristol on 23 March is designed to improve transparency by providing an insight into how economic appraisal of active travel schemes is conducted by the DfT and LEPs. The information gained will help improve your funding proposals for walking and cycling initiatives.

This is our third event of this type, following previous events in London and Manchester. For those attending the taster session at the Act TraveWise Annual Conference on 28 January, this is a chance to receive in-depth training on this topic. The workshop is aimed at local authority officers involved in compiling bids to the Department for Transport for the funding of active and sustainable travel initiatives. It is equally suitable for those involved in compiling local funding bids such as through LEPs.

The workshop is for Act TravelWise members only, although others are welcome to become members in advance of the event. To find out if your organisation is currently a member, see our Membership List. Please contact or 0208 144 7366 for more information.

The workshop is delivered by the Department of Transport's economists Philipp Thiessen and Joe Gaytten. It will include a detailed introduction to the Department's recently published web-based economic appraisal toolkit and provide insights on what makes a good bid for funding for sustainable and active travel initiatives from the perspective of the Department's economists.

With this in mind, there will be three elements to the session:

  1. Overview of the Toolkit including a tutorial on how to get the best from it.
  2. Insights from the Department's economists on what makes a good funding bid from their perspective.
  3. An opportunity to try out the toolkit with the Department's experts on-hand to deal with any queries.

To get the most from the session, delegates are encouraged to bring current or previous economic appraisals and also their own laptops, tablets or other wi-fi enabled devices. Unfortunately we are not able to provide this equipment.
