With issues such as the environment, public health and congestion for the transport sector to deal with on an increasingly limited budget, the challenges for sustainable transport field are great.
To illuminate these issues we have invited two of the leading employers in the UK, as well as representatives from Central and Local Government to outline the actual real challenges they face in terms of transport, and the contribution that they hope the sustainable transport field can deliver on their behalf.
The Co-operative group are one of the largest private sector employers in Manchester, and in 2012 are moving offices where there will be considerably lower parking allocation. Amanda Jones, Head of Business Change, will outline the challenges she faces.
The NHS as the largest public sector organisation in the UK faces considerable issues regarding parking and of course cost, but also looks to set the pace as regards the health and carbon agendas. Their challenges therefore are considerable, and we have invited David Pencheon, Director of the Sustainable Development Unit to present them to the audience.
Local and Central government are both employers themselves and also set and enforce the policy for other employers. While traffic flow, access to jobs, goods and services and providing economic growth are vital to their constituencies, they also must consider carbon management, safety and deal with political issues ensuring public support.
Do we have the answers they need?
It is generally accepted within the discipline that sustainable transport offers low cost solutions that can answer all of the issues over environment, health, efficiency and save money. To emphasise this we are inviting leading figures from the worlds of cycling, walking, public transport, new vehicle technology, remote working, car clubs, car share as well as road charging and parking charges, to present in five minutes what they can offer in terms of the challenges we have set, and provide evidence.
The event will include two panel debate sessions where the audience can quiz the speakers on their promises. The two sessions of answers will be themed around alternatives to the car and the new role of the car.
If you need answers about what sustainable transport has to offer, this year’s Annual Conference and AGM is a must attend event.
