The North West of England is one of most dynamic growth areas in Britain and securing an efficient transport system for the region is core to its continued growth. Sustainable transport networks will be needed to be considered to do this.
During the event we will look at the wider context of developing an efficient and low carbon transport system for the region, and the role of Smarter Choice behaviour change interventions in creating this.
The event will feature keynote presentations and a topical discussion from a panel of academics, business leaders and senior practitioners who will discuss the best available transport strategies available for the North West region, and what options should be put forward to ensure a sustained reduction of Carbon emissions from future transport activity and maintain a competitive economic position.
It is now more than five years since The Smarter Choices report recommended that behaviour change interventions should be tied in with infrastructure developments to be most effective. Recent guidance on from the Department for Transport for local authorities developing their Local Transport Plan 3 and Delivering a Sustainable Transport System also reiterate this point, we will highlight best practice where these policies have been applied in the North West. An official from the DfT will also help summarise the government’s position on how it hopes local authorities will work with these policy tools.
The event will include case study presentations from some of the best examples of Smarter Choices in the North West and discuss their wider application and implications. Peter Black from GMPTW will outline the role of Smarter Choices in the Climate Change strategy for Manchester, we will look at combining hard and soft measure in Lancaster, one of four of the country’s eighteen cycling demonstration towns which are located in the North West, and we will hear from two of the leading private sector organisations with travel plans in the region, Unilever and Bentley.
The event will end with a series of practical workshops on policy and travel plan issues such as writing LTP3, measuring the impact of Climate Change and promoting active travel.
