The annual 2008 South Pennines Walk & Ride Festival will be held over 16 days between Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 28.

It will include guided cycle rides, walks, conservation days and other events that celebrate the South Pennines' social and cultural history, wildlife, landscapes, traditions and more. We also hope to include heritage events, horse rides and canal walks as well as outdoor activities for the disabled.

It is organised under the aegis of Pennine Prospects, the urban and rural regeneration company which represents the local authorities, Natural England and voluntary/community sector groups and utility companies in the South Pennines region.

The organisers hope that individuals, or the organisation which they represent, could offer to organise and lead a walk, cycle ride, horse ride or other events as part of the festival's programme.

The aim is make the festival programme as diverse as possible, and to include events suitable for people of many levels of ability, as well as people from all different backgrounds and cultures.

The organisers wich to encourage offers of mid-week walks, rides and events to ensure that there are activities on each of the festival's 16 days, and to include walks, rides or other visits to South Pennine landmarks such as moorland Panopticons, Stoodley Pike, Gibson Mill, Winter Hill, Standedge Tunnel and Rivington Pike.

There is also some space within the programme to promote walks from existing lisitngs produced by local authorities, community and recreation groups.

Please see attached a form on which the necessary details of the proposed event can be filled-in, together with guidance notes, and a map showing the South Pennines, defining the area within which the events will be taking place. Please feel free to offer as many walks, rides or other events as you like.

It is requested that offers could be returned by Friday, May 23, so that the programme can be made ready for distribution before July.
